Thank you, Happiest Seaside Town!

Thank you, Happiest Seaside Town!

This morning, I sat staring at multiple empty marina slips while enjoying a hot cup of coffee, beautiful trees lining the shore, gentle water flowing by, and happy birds tweeting their morning tunes.  Grand Haven is truly a gift with all it has to offer with the ever-changing landscape graciously provided by Mother Nature and the exciting events consistently offered by Grand Haven and the strong community behind this town.

Last weekend, there was not an empty marina slip as far as the eye could see due to Grand Haven Area Convention and Visitor’s Bureau hosting a multifaceted event called Salmon Festival.  This festival features many entertaining activities, such as a gourmet salmon cook-off, purple grape stomp, fish boil, adult local beverage tasting, art fair, and a fishing contest, just to name some of the options for the weekend of pleasure.  Salmon Festival has become a tradition for our family and some of our closest friends over the years.  My husband reserves a slip for our boat called “Ruffin’ It” at the Grand Haven Municipal Marina six months in advance and not a day later or else the marina is usually booked after that time period.  With a marina slip, we have a home in Grand Haven for the fun-filled weekend.

As most of us do, I wear many hats, including being a Physical Therapist for 19 years.  As a P.T., observing people was part of my training at Indiana University so I could become comfortable with the variations in how people walk, move, etc. in an attempt to determine the cause of the pain and therefore appropriate treatment for each patient.  Thankfully, observing people or “people watching” over salmon festival was beneficial in other ways as well and provided much enjoyment for us on Ruffin’ It.

Who provided the most entertainment?  Maybe it was one set of energetic grandparents with a busy toddler and an adorable baby in tow.  The grandpa crawled around the vibrant green grass with the toddler on his back while the grandma giggled and held the sweet baby.  Or possibly it was the kids running and playing in the splash pad in the 80 plus degree weather in their regular clothes and no bathing suits.  Was there a shortage of bathing suits last weekend?  Perhaps people watching combined with four-legged friends was the absolute best entertainment of all.  Most of the weekend, our 3 year old black Lab named Groovy and our 3 month old yellow Lab named Sparkles were on our boat making friends with all dog-friendly people and posing for picture after picture after picture.  One lady even yelled, “Oh my gosh!  I have to run back and get my camera.  Make the dogs stay.”  Another man replied, “I don’t think they are going anywhere for a long time!”  Multiple four-legged lovers even stopped to share stories of their dogs with us as they strolled the boardwalk each sunny afternoon.

The festivities last weekend along with “people watching” all led to something very important: Smiles of all shapes and sizes.  Research shows positive emotions and smiling help us to effectively handle stress which improves overall health and increases happiness.  Thank you, Grand Haven, for all of the smiles, keeping us healthier, and truly being the happiest seaside town.  Cheers!  We are already looking forward to next salmon festival😊

Pura Vida!

I am preparing for a trip to Costa Rica and thinking about the Pura Vida chapter in If I Can't Be At Your Feet: A Look at Life with Four Legs and a Tail.  Please enjoy this small excerpt and have a fabulous week with your four-legged friends!

"Costa Rica's country motto is Pura Vida which means more than pure life to the Ticos (Costa Ricans) and those who fall in love with this beautiful place while visiting.  Pura Vida tells us all that life is short, so spread happiness while we are here and make every day count."

Sad day in my world

Today, I discovered I lost an amazing friend of 26 years.  Heaven gained a wonderful angel today who gives the best hugs and has an incredible smile.  I am thankful to have known Phyllis, my cheerleading coach of 7 years, for all of these years.  She impacted my life while growing up in multiple positive ways that I will never forget.

Thankfully, I have my yellow Lab Happy here to console me at home while my two oldest boys are at school, my husband is at work, and our baby is napping.  She has been a reliable furry shoulder to cry on today.  Happy knows I am upset and is "at my feet" more today than usual.  It is incredible how four-legged friends know when we need them most.

Gunther has a new website...labatyourfeet.com

Hi Faithful Followers!

Sorry I have been a little behind this year regarding blogging.  I guess a new baby will do that to you.  :)  Little Everett is now 9 months old, and he is growing way too quickly.  However, I think it may be time to get back to work and continue to spread the positivity that Gunther left for me to share in the form of his book If I Can't Be At Your Feet

Gunther now has a website for his book If I Can't Be At Your Feet. The new site can be found at labatyourfeet.com.  Please enjoy!  I included some fun pictures for you to enjoy, including a seasonal favorite with Gunther wearing Christmas reindeer antlers.  Every dog should have a pair of these:)    I hope to include a podcast next week from my radio debut on WGVU, a West Michigan station.  I have a lot to learn about websites, radio interviews, and Santa's delivery schedule.  However, I learn a little each day and hope that everything I am experiencing from If I Can't Be At Your Feet leads me to be a better person and of course the best momma to our four-legged friends!

Have a safe and happy holiday season, fill your pets' stockings to overflowing, and be thankful for all of your blessings.

Hi!  Happy Spring!

REVIEWS:

A 5 star book for sure. I read about 20 books a year, and this is the best of 2011. A refreshing and insightful look at life from the wonderful family dog, whom we all too often take for granted. Real life in this age of reality. Most unique, honest and down to earth. Even if you have no dog or dogs in your family, you'll find it most refreshing. And you'll likely soon be puppy shopping.

Awesome read! If you have a dog already, this book will make you appreciate him/her even more and want to give him/her a big hug. If you don't have a dog, you will want to get one after reading this inspiring book. This pooch has a very insightful, positive, and refreshing perspective on life. We can all learn a lot from him!

A must read to help you remember what matters in life, as taught by a dog. Even if you don't have a dog, you will appreciate the funny and wise thoughts that run through Gunther's mind, and laugh at his funny antics. This is a great gift for any animal lover, and a perfect read for your next book!

I never knew that a dog as wise as Gunther could cause so much trouble! The author translates Gunther's thoughts so well that you can't help falling in love with him, despite all his shenanigans! Life lessons through the eyes of a dog are surprisingly valuable and insightful. It's a perfect feel-good book that reminds us to slow down, love with reckless abandon, and live life to the fullest!

Let's Go Hoosiers!

As an avid Hoosier fan, I was excited to see the Hoosiers beat Iowa tonight at Assembly Hall.  With Zeller's multiple dunks, Pritchard's 8 points in 68 seconds, Elston's 11 points, and the entire Hoosier team scoring 103 total points made it a very thrilling game to watch!

Of course, anytime I watch Hoosier basketball, I think of the Hoosier Pup Chapter in If I Can't Be At Your Feet.  Please enjoy the following segment written through our black Labrador Retriever's eyes from the Hoosier Pup Chapter.

"Even as a puppy, I had a few late nights exploring campus and Kirkwood Avenue. Kirkwood is loaded with shops, restaurants, and bars for Hoosiers to enjoy.  I clearly remember sneaking out for my first night on the town after my mom, brothers, and sisters were fast asleep.  I bounced out the front door to see what I could see.  I strolled down to Kirkwood Avenue to see for myself what it was like.  I did a little window shopping, but I didn't see any clothes with holes for a tail.
Next, I stopped at Nick's English Hut to catch a glimpse of the Hoosiers playing basketball on television through the front door.  However, I couldn't see any part of the game because of the long line of people waiting to get in for the basketball festivities. No worries.  Bloomington is full of fun stuff to do, so I ran over to Upstairs Pub to hang out and learn to play pool."

If I Can't Be At Your Feet is available online at https://bookstore.iuniverse.com/Cart/Default3Phase.aspx?BookSId=SKU-000487800 or through amazon.com as well as other major online retail sites.

Enjoy and let's go Hoosiers!!!

New review for If I Can't Be At Your Feet

Readers are providing much appreciated feedback and reviews and here is the latest  . . .

If I Can’t Be At Your Feet
In his autobiography, Gunther Denali, the black lab, takes us along with him as he reminisces on some of the many (mis)adventures during his 15 years. His philosophy of living every minute to its fullest is evident as he recounts his life from puppyhood into advanced age. Gunther Denali has lessons for all of us. What a life! A word of caution: don’t let your dog read this book. Some of Gunther’s antics may not be things you want your dog trying. And you will need to explain to your dog why you don’t throw lavish birthday parties complete with wrapped birthday presents for it every year.

Crystal Frakes Brown, an independent author, was inspired to write this book by the love and loyalty of her black lab Gunther, who stuck by her side throughout the many sleepless nights of her pregnancy.
